Why origin and processing matter

Altitude and proximity to the equator shape Ethiopian black seed.

Origin

1,800–3,000 m equatorial sun

Altitude and proximity to the equator bring strong sun, cool nights and slow ripening.

Cultivation

Volcanic highland soils around Gondar

Slow ripening, crop rotation and cool highland nights shape the size and aroma of the seed.

Processing

Cold-pressed locally

Pressed near Gondar, mechanically and at no more than 35 °C. Bottled in Germany, in light-proof glass.

How to recognise good black seed oil

Origin, pressing and bottle determine quality. Here is what matters:

What to look for
  • Check the unit: the bigger number is not what counts. 1% equals 10,000 mg/kg, or 10 mg/g. The same amount, just written differently.
  • Hot pressing & refining: heat can impair the aroma and delicate compounds.
  • Clear glass & plastic: light makes delicate oils age faster.
vitaphyt Ethiopia (single origin, highlands)
  • Up to 5% thymoquinone: measured in the pure oil by Eurofins.
  • Cold-pressed at max. 35 °C: mechanically pressed, bottled unfiltered.
  • Black UV glass: keeps out UV radiation and daylight.

Our family in Gondar

One family, one place, one chain: from the highland harvest to the bottle in your hand.

Couple in traditional white clothing by a flowering black seed field in front of a round house

Our family farms fields near Gondar, at 1,800 to 3,000 m. What grows there, we gently cold-press on site. Only then does the oil travel to Germany for bottling.

The seed goes into the press without pre-heating, at no more than 35 °C. The oil was tested by Eurofins, accredited to ISO 17025.

Thymoquinone, the main component of the essential oil, reaches up to 5% in our oil, depending on the harvest. Eurofins measured it in the oil itself, not in the seed.

With us, this whole chain is in one pair of hands. So our origin is not a claim, but our own family history.

How to use the oil

Shake briefly before use so that the natural sediment is distributed. Three habits that make room for it every day.

Mornings

Enjoy it neat

Neat from the spoon: bold, peppery and unadulterated.

Getting started

Stirred into honey

Mixed with honey or a little lemon juice, the heat becomes milder: a good start.

At mealtimes

A finishing drizzle

A peppery finish over salad, vegetable soup or hummus. Do not heat it, or the essential oils lose their aroma.

From our customers' kitchens

Feedback by email and Instagram.

“Three weeks in my morning routine, and the spoon now sits next to my coffee. The heat is real, but that is exactly how it should be.”

Miriam K.

“The finish over hummus and lentils: guests ask about it every time. Peppery, but the good kind.”

Jonas B.

“A spoonful over tomatoes, cucumber and parsley, with flatbread for dipping. Bold, slightly bitter. The bottle now sits next to the salt.”

Aylin S.

Black seed oil FAQ

Origin, use and quality, answered briefly.

Why does the oil taste so intense and peppery?
The peppery, sharp taste comes from natural thymoquinone: up to 5% in the pure oil, according to the laboratory report.
Why is the oil cloudy, and what is the sediment at the bottom?
We do not filter our oil. Cloudy and suspended particles from pressing remain in it, entirely naturally. Shake the bottle briefly before use.
How do I use it day to day?
Neat from the spoon or stirred into a little honey. In the kitchen as a finish over salad, hummus, lentils or vegetable soup. As a dressing with lemon juice and a pinch of salt.
Can I fry or cook with black seed oil?
It is not suitable for frying. Heat changes the aroma of the essential oils. Add it to the finished dish after cooking.
Where does the seed come from?
From the highlands near Gondar in the Amhara region, at 1,800–3,000 m. Our family has grown black seed there since the 1960s. Cultivation, cleaning and cold pressing take place in Ethiopia. The oil is bottled in Germany.
What does “cold-pressed at max. 35 °C” mean?
The seed is pressed mechanically, without pre-heating. The oil warms to no more than 35 °C. This preserves its bold aroma.
What did the laboratory test?
Eurofins analysed a sample of our oil for thymoquinone, heavy metals and pesticides. Thymoquinone was measured in the oil, not in the seed. You can open the report as a PDF at the top of this page.
How do I compare thymoquinone figures correctly?
Check the unit and the reference value. 1% equals 10 mg/g or 10,000 mg/kg. And ask whether it was measured in the oil or in the seed.
How do I store it once opened?
Close tightly after each use and store cool (12–18 °C) and away from light. The fridge is fine but makes it slightly cloudy: a purely physical effect, with no loss of quality.
How long does a bottle keep once opened?
Stored cool and dark, the oil keeps for 9 months after opening. The UV-protective bottle shields it from light.

Can black seed oil be consumed during pregnancy?
Black seed oil contains essential oils. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, please consult your doctor before consuming it.
